Abstract: This session examines the increasing frequency and magnitude of cyberattacks which increasingly impact our families, our communities and our nation. We will review how many “solutions” ignore both the obvious and common sense alike in our collective national desire for quick fixes. And finally we will take a high level look at some of the fundamental changes that are needed nationally, corporately and even within our cyber security industry itself to produce the needed significant improvement.

Abstract: We all know about social engineering and phishing; but ‘Is it as simple as sending an email or asking for a click?’ probably not. As hackers and attacks evolve, they will go from simple tricks to very sophisticated attacks. So how do we know what these attacks will be? Simply, we can’t. So how can we detect the new attacks? This session will cover the state of the attacks and the directions they are taking. Ultimately, we will discuss strategies and how we can define the science that will evolve to thwart the evolving various attacks.

Title: “Cyber Threats, Influence Campaigns the Weaponizing of Social Media”
Location: The Woodlands, TX
Event Website: http://www.wachouston.org/programs-a-events/programs/videos-of-previous-programs/event/387
Abstract: From Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election to Cambridge Analytica covertly accessing the personal data of 87 Million Facebook users to the creation of bogus social media profiles and activist groups, cyber threats and social media forces are shaping the U.S. and the world in new and unknown ways.
Not many years ago, people were informed by a relatively small number of known media outlets. Today people receive news and other information from thousands of different and often unverified sources; and they also impact the discourse through their own comments and connections fostering a newly multi-polar media world. Likewise, nations and militaries traditionally fought for naval or air superiority, now ‘information superiority’ and the collection of, access to and dissemination of data is an ever growing concern for governments, economies and militaries.
